June 2, 2009

Dear Students and Parents,

The Board of Directors deliberated yesterday morning about the reopening of CMS on Wednesday after the 7 days have passed that the Department of Health required of us to be closed.  Many factors were considered in this very important decision including the fact that we would only have 6 days left of school, the ages of the students that have been affected by the virus, the uncertainty of how much the virus continues to spread in the city and amongst our own community, the opinions of the CDC about protocols to follow after a virus has been identified, the probable way in which our community will perceive reopening  and the moral obligation we have to be professional and maintain the highest American standards we can.  I am sure that you can see from that list that it was quite a moral dilemma and a weighty decision taken quite seriously.  This morning 2 Board members and I met with the Secretary of the Department of Public Health explaining our plan to him.

Here are the decisions that were made:

1)      Elementary School( grades pre K through 5 ) will not reopen for students this academic year.  There will be one day next week that students may come in to return their books and to say good bye to their teachers.  Mr. McCall will send out a communication about this in the next day or two.

2)      Middle School ( grades 6, 7 and 8 ) will not reopen for students this academic year.  There will be one day next week that students may come in to return their books and to say good bye to their teachers.  Mr. Bunnell will send out a communication about this in the next day or two.  Mr. Bunnell and/or Mr. Franco will inform all 8th graders who are studying for the Pruebas Nacionales what the new prep dates and times will be.

3)      Seniors will come to school on Wednesday to return their books and go through the check out process.  All Senior events: Alumni Reception, Graduation and Prom will go on as usual.

4)      High School students grades 9, 10 and 11 will return to school on Wednesday  and their normal semester final examinations will take place next week.  Grades 9-11 Awards Assembly will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) in the gym at 8:30 am.

5)      All employees of CMS will return to their normal work schedules this Wednesday June 3.

As I indicated to you in my letter dated May 31, protocol is very clear about specific ways to contain a virus.  Thus it is of utmost importance that we all must agree upon the following items:

1)      No student with a fever or a cold may come to school until three days after all symptoms are gone.

2)      Those students that previously tested positive for Influenza A will only return to school with a doctors certificate and three days after all symptoms are gone.

3)      Our CMS doctors  will be manning pedestrian entrances to school each morning along with some volunteers checking to be sure that nobody enters with any symptoms of a cold or fever.

4)      If there are any CMS community members that are hospitalized for these type of symptoms then Mr. Delman must be informed immediately by the family as should the Office of Public Health.

5)      Community members with flu like symptoms should avoid crowds and places where they would be in contact with a lot of other people

6)      Everyone should cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and preferably into their elbow or a tissue.  Children must be taught this.  Hand washing or sanitizing should take place immediately afterwards.

7)      Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.  If you do so then wash your hands.

We will do our thorough cleaning of the school on Tuesday again and we will have hand sanitizing solution in every room and office throughout the school.

One more time we want to thank you all for the support you are giving us through these unusual circumstances.

Sincerely,

Jack Delman, Headmaster

      and

Board of Directors,

Carol Morgan School

Estimados estudiantes y padres:

Sinceramente

Jack Delman

Director General y la Junta de Directores,

Carol Morgan School
